Kinky Rhino – Garage Roque

Kinky Rhino

The first thing that comes to mind when I listen to anything by Kinky Rhino is that kid from my high school with the shaggy hair and leather cuff bracelets. The one that you just knew went home at 3:00pm everyday and plugged his guitar into his amp and rocked until his mom made him shut up.

Kinky Rhino’s Garage Roque – and every other song I’ve heard by them for that matter – are pure, dirty ol’ garage rock. Similar in sound to The Sonics, their sound is heavy and loud without being too much. You’ll play the tune way too loud and your ears will hurt afterwards, but you won’t mind that much.

Brainchild of Kinky Rhino, Jeffrey Wright, has been creating music since his picked up a pair of drumsticks in middle school. It was while touring with Blue Man Group that he decided he wanted to try his hand at writing and joined forces with other BMG members Jordan Wesolek, Terry Tungjungyatham, Anthony Riscica and Tony Aguirre.

Like their first tune, All-American Slam, the band’s newest song Garage Roque starts off with heavy electric guitar and some simple percussion before crashing into hard rock and typical punk/garage rock sound. When I first clicked play on the tune, I sat there just waiting for the vocalist to start screaming at me. I expected to not really be able to make out the lyrics, but I was pleasantly surprised how well Kinky Rhino sticks to the garage rock brand without straying too much into the metal genre.

The lyrics in the chorus read: “No, I don’t know where I’m at, maybe I’m going nowhere, but I’m never coming back,” are so, so perfect for Kinky Rhino’s first single, as Wright transitions into the roles of songwriter and lead singer. It’s awesome to see musicians finally take the plunge and put everything they have into something they’re passionate about.

It’s not going to be easy for Kinky Rhino to break onto the scene; garage-rock isn’t as big now as it was in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s when The Sonics and The Kinks were dominating, but with songs like Garage Roque, they’ll get there.
