The Locals – The Willful Suspension of Disbelief

If you haven’t heard of The Locals yet, this is your chance. They’ve just released a new single, so here’s your introduction to “The Willful Suspension of Disbelief.” With a sound like the Silversun Pickups meeting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, here’s why you should get to know them now.

The vocals stand out the most, but this is largely due to the fact that they both contradict and complement the instrumentation at the same time. At first, the instrumentation made me think of the Silversun Pickups – kind of ethereal, flighty, never quite landing. However, the vocals are the exact opposite. Always grounded and never too airy or breathy, the vocals carry this song verse to chorus with a punch. The vocals are strong and could stand on their own, but never actually take away from the full effect of the lyrics or other instruments. It’s a balance executed quite skillfully.
