Tommy Marz Band – Star

Tommy Marz Band

The Tommy Marz Band is a combination of a seasoned musician, and talent that doesn’t care to quit. Hailing from my hometown, Detroit, this band is a keen reminder of ‘90s rock with the newest single, “Star.” While some may not know what the heck I’m talking about, the Tommy Marz Band has a particular sound that would be a nice fit to any episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” You Joss Whedon fans know what I mean.

After over a decade of band performances, Tommy Marz recorded his first solo album a few years ago, and continues to make new music. Returning to his rock’n’roll roots, the recent release of a few different songs gives listeners a taste of the action, while begging for more. Other reviews of the band relate Tommy Marz’s journey to other artists regarding the their flip flop from pop to rock’n’roll, while his was the opposite. His new album is anything but pop, meaning if you can’t handle the rock, you better start rolling.

Pop may mean “popular” in its creation, but since then it took on a life of its own and became a genre, one that includes artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna, now including others similar to Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus. It’s an upbeat funk of flurried sounds and sometimes mindless meanings, but the Tommy Marz Band is nothing like that. Although some pop music isn’t under this generalization, the current wave of pop is associated with less rocking rhythm and more of a jumpstyle dance.

“Star” and “Rock and Roll Girl” will fill you with head nodding, foot tapping feels. Once you’re done listening you’re left with that hole in your gut because you realized there isn’t more music from the band at your disposal. Sure, there are a few tracks here and there, but not enough to sate your appetite for some reminiscent rock.
